It was another perfectly awful day in Starvation Lake. The town was lost in a swirl of snow. Except for the snowplow, the streets were deserted, but the single traffic light continued to blink red and green.

Outside town, the lake was a white circle of ice. It was frozen six months of the year. Even when it finally thawed, it wasn't much of a lake. In a dry year, it was a swamp. In a rainy year, the only fish anyone could catch were blue gills, which didn't need a lot of water to thrash around in.
