Now, Maigro's home was not nestled in the Gateway Mountains where she was now imprisoned, far from it. She belonged to a tiny town on the plains that folks called Thackers Town. This little-known place lay at the very edge of the plains on the banks of the Clear River. It was a small village with cozy wooden cottages, each of which had a short chimney pipe that puffed gray smoke nearly around the clock. The people were mostly herders, but there were also farmers who planted the large river bottom fields with grain and fruit trees. Their harvest could be sold at one of the larger cities in exchange for tools, wine, books, and a variety of other goods not available on the prairie. Thackers Town afforded everyone a good life filled with hard work and the satisfaction of a job well done. The people there ate well, worked hard, and were also known to have a gathering or two during the year. It seemed that everything there revolved around packing into their storehouses, cellars and smokehouses a wide variety of wonderful things to eat. And they were very successful at it.
Maigro was a skinny, pale kid with an ornery disposition, and seemed to despise almost everything and everyone. If she didn't hate boys so much, she may have even despised being a girl. Still, much to her mother's dismay, she would cut her blonde hair extremely short so that when she would fight, which was nearly a daily occurrence, she could not be dragged by her long hair to that muck pile. If a stranger saw her, she could have easily been mistaken for a skinny blond boy.
